His letters, as a private in the Richmond Howitzers and Rockbridge Artillery, addressed to Mrs. Susan V. Boston, at Thompson's Cross Roads, Louisa County, Va. [manuscript] 1847-1863.

Discusses camp life, and action Kean participated in at Manassas, Stone Bridge, Kenersville, Winchester, Martinsburg, and around Romney in West Virginia. Letters of, 11 April 1862, has an excellent description of Gen. Turner Ashby, and 23 Aug. 1862, briefly sketches Gen. Philip St. George Cocke. Also discussed are the cotton embargo, enlistment laws, citizen's attitude toward soldiers, the Louisiana Zuaves, and family and personal affairs. Other items include a letter, 14 Jan. 1847, from the Kean family of Buckingham County, Va. to their sister, Patsy Shelton, of Gum Springs, Louisa County, Va., and a letter 1863, R.C. Berkeley to Susan Boston and a bit of doggerel.
